There are typically three sources of statutory fair housing laws. The main source is the federal fair housing act. Texas also has its own fair housing law, and some cities have fair housing ordinances as well. We have provided links to these below. City ordinances will vary, and some may not be available on the internet. Sometimes city ordinances can provide more protection than the federal or state acts, so check with your city to find out what is covered. For example, the federal and state acts do not provide protection for discrimination based upon marital status or sexual orientation, but some cities in Texas might provide this protection in their ordinances (e.g., Austin).
